Opening Block (Kakiwake). The fourteenth step of the Heian Yodan kata is the opening block. If seized, e.g., by the lapels, by both hands or attacked by both fists of an opponent, one breaks the hold or blocks the attack by a forceful uncrossing of the wrists in the space between the attacker's arms, usually immediately followingwith a kicking or striking counterattack.
